Eyelid Problems, Lumps & Bumps

The eyelid is a complex structure and just like anywhere else on the skin it is not uncommon for bumps and lumps to appear on or around the eyelids.

Although the bumps maybe painful, most lumps on the eyelid are harmless and will go away on their own with treatment at home. They are usually caused by bacteria or a blockage in the oil glands.

However, those bumps which do not disappear by themselves and possibly obstruct your vision may require to be removed by minor surgery.

Types of Bump

There are two common types of bumps on the eyelid:
• Chalazia
• Styes

Chalazia

A chalazion is a small firm lump which usually occurs on the upper eyelid but sometimes can appear on the lower. It is caused when a tiny gland under the skin is blocked and becomes inflamed.

Stye

A stye, the most common type of eyelid bump, is a small lump on the inside or outside of the eyelid. It can be red and painful and is usually caused when bacteria gets into the oil glands of the eyelid. The medical name for a stye is hordeolum and sometimes referred to as an infected eyelid cyst by doctors.
