Healthy Eyes

It is important to look after your eyes, and regular eye tests and a healthy life style can help you maintain good vision.

Eye Tests

It is good practice to have your eyes tested every two years or if you notice a change in your sight.
As well as checking if your eye prescription has changed, your optician can also check to see if your eyes are healthy. They are able to detect early signs of many eye conditions, even if you are unaware of any symptoms. Early detection can also help treat the problem more effectively.

Smoking

Giving up smoking is not only good for your general health but also your eyes. Research has shown that smokers are more likely to develop age-related macular degeneration and cataracts, compared with those who do not smoke.

Being Active

Exercising and staying fit can help the health of your eyes. Staying active can help you maintain a healthy blood pressure, lower your risk of getting diabetes, or narrowing/ hardening of the arteries. Your risk of sight loss would increase should you have any other these conditions.

Healthy Diet

Having a healthy balanced diet is good for your overall health, but it could also keep your retina healthy. Sunflower seeds can also be beneficial too. They are high in vitamin E and zinc which keep your eyes healthy and lower the risk of eye diseases.

Your risk of developing early age-related macular degeneration could also increase if you consume more alcohol than the recommended weekly allowance.

Sun Damage

It is important to never look at the sun as it could cause irreversible damage to your eyesight. Some research studies have also found a link between sunlight exposure and developing cataracts.

It is also recommended to wear sunglasses that have the CE mark or the British Standard BS EN ISO 12312: 2013. This ensures the lenses have a safe level of ultraviolet protection.
